Fluoride application

Fluoride varnish strengthens enamel making it more resistant to decay

This quick, painless treatment is usually given to children between the ages of three and seven, as an additional form of protection alongside regular brushing.

Fluoride varnish is a highly concentrated form of fluoride that comes as a yellow, fruity smelling gel. It slows down decay by stopping demineralisation, making the outer layer of the tooth more resistant to attack from acid. The varnish peels off after several hours, but stays in contact with the enamel long enough to be effective.

At Cwmbran Dental Care, we follow the Welsh Government’s dental health programme ‘Designed to Smile’, which recommends twice yearly fluoride varnish application, along with daily toothbrushing.

What does the treatment involve?

After cleaning the teeth, we apply the fluoride varnish with a small, soft brush. The varnish quickly sets and remains in contact with the teeth until it is brushed off again. We advise that the teeth shouldn’t be brushed for a few hours so the varnish has time to work.

Are fluoride applications safe?

Yes, fluoride varnish is completely safe and used by many dental health professionals worldwide. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral and is very effective when used to help protect young teeth from decay.
